The UNHCR is the United Nation’s Refugee Agency.  The UNHCR contributes to informed decision-making in refugee operations by providing accurate and timely data and statistics.  “This key resource is used by all partners to respond to the needs of refugee populations.”  The UNHCR monitors seven population categories: Refugees, Asylum-Seekers, Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), Stateless Persons, Returned Refugees, Returned IDPs, and Others.  The UNHCR gathers data from the world’s nations and publishes its findings in an annual statistical yearbook.  According to the UNHCR, at the end of 2010, “an estimated 43.3 million people were forcibly displaced due to conflict and persecution.”  (this figure is the highest it has been in more than 15 years).  The UNHCR’s website provides access to information and reports relating to the plight of the world’s refugees.  See: www.unhcr.org
